It is rumored that a new iPhone SE with a USB-C port will be released next year, while the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are expected to be discontinued in September next year. The first-generation Apple Pencil may also be discontinued at some point, and the Mac Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad accessories are already beginning to be updated to USB-C alongside the release of the Mac mini.
Advantages of USB-C for Consumers and the Environment
The connectors used in consumer electronics have historically gone through significant changes to meet evolving needs, transitioning from Mini USB to Micro USB and then to USB-C. However, achieving a broad consensus on USB-C adoption is a recent development. The widespread adoption of USB-C can be attributed to its exceptional compatibility. The European Union has announced that, starting in 2024, all phones and tablets will use the USB-C charging interface. Has Apple Completely Abandoned the Lightning Interface?
Yes, Apple plans to fully transition from the Lightning port to USB-C by the end of 2024. This decision means that all new products Apple launches after 2024, including iPhones and AirPods, will use the USB-C interface. Apple began the gradual shift to USB-C in 2022. This legislation may accelerate Apple’s move away from the Lightning interface worldwide.
Although Apple will continue selling current products with Lightning interfaces until the end of 2024, these products are expected to gradually phase out and ultimately exit the market. Additionally, Apple is exploring new charging technologies, such as contact-based or millimeter-wave transmission for charging and data transfer, which may appear in future products rather than immediately replacing the USB-C interface.
